Above is the video of Tik Tok by Kesha.

Tik Tok – Kesha

Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy
(Hey, what up girl?)
Got my glasses on, I'm out the door
I'm gonna hit this city (Lets go)
Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack
Cause when I leave for the night, I ain't coming back
I'm talking - pedicure on our toes, toes
Trying on all our clothes, clothes
Boys blowing up our phones, phones
Drop-topping, playing our favorite cds
Pulling up to the parties
Trying to get a little bit tipsy

Don't stop, make it pop
DJ, blow my speakers up
Tonight, Imma fight
Till we see the sunlight
Tick tock, on the clock
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh [x2]

Ain't got a care in world, but got plenty of beer
Ain't got no money in my pocket, but I'm already here
And now the dudes are lining up cause they hear we got swagger
But we kick em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger
I'm talking about - everybody getting crunk, crunk
Boys trying to touch my junk, junk
Gonna smack him if he getting too drunk, drunk
Now, now - we goin till they kick us out, out
Or the police shut us down, down
Police shut us down, down
Po-po shut us -

Don't stop, make it pop
DJ, blow my speakers up
Tonight, Imma fight
Till we see the sunlight
Tick tock, on the clock
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh [x2]

DJ, you build me up
You break me down
My heart, it pounds
Yeah, you got me
With my hands up
You got me now
You got that sound
Yea, you got me

DJ, you build me up
You break me down
My heart, it pounds
Yeah, you got me
With my hands up
Put your hands up
Put your hands up

No, the party don't start til I walk in
Don't stop, make it pop
DJ, blow my speakers up
Tonight, Imma fight
Till we see the sunlight
Tick tock, on the clock
But the party don't stop no
Woah-oh oh oh
Woah-oh oh oh [x2]

At the start of the song we hear the lyrics “Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy” to link this to the song we get to see the artist, Kesha, sitting up from being in the bath as if she has just woken up. As well as this linking the lyrics to the video it also shows the audience who is the main character in the video. This shows off the artist so they are easily recognised resulting in the artist also being promoted.

Another link between lyrics and the video is when we hear the lyrics “Trying to get a little bit tipsy.” As these lyrics are sang we see some special effects as the medium close-up of Kesha becomes distorted and blurred. This again links the song to the video which in turn promotes the song. It also links the video to its target audience. As the target audience is a typical outgoing teenager they will often be getting drunk and going out. This is why the video and lyrics makes this link as it appeals and represents the life and actions of a typical teenager.

Towards the middle of the song we get to see a sort dance routine which is typical of most music videos. As the dance takes place we hear the lyrics “DJ, you build me up, You break me down.” This link between the lyrics and video again keep the link between the song strong so that the audience maintain the thought of the video being strongly involved with the song and lyrics.

Though out the video the artist Kesha is travelling to a party. When she does arrive at the party we hear the lyrics “No, the party don't start till I walk in.” at this point the music stops and we just hear Kesha singing. This builds the importance and focus on the fact that the party doesn’t start till she arrives. By doing this the audience again appreciate that Kesha has great importance in the video as she is the main singer meaning that she will get the fame and praise. This makes the audience want to buy her music as she has a clear link with the video.

As well as having conventions on links with the video and lyrics we get different conventions from for example the beat of the song.

The beat of the song is very important as it gives the song rhythm and makes the consumer feel involved within it.

One of the main examples of a link of the beat to the video is a technique called cut to the beat. This means that the cuts from scene to scene will very often happen on the beat. Cut to the beat can be seen in this music video. As a result of it being in the video, the audience feel more involved in the video which will often help them to enjoy the video and song. This is a key aspect as the idea of the video is to sell the song to the target audience. Making the audience feel the music and feel involved with the song they are more likely to buy the song or even buy the video which means more profit and publicity for the artist.

As well as Cut to the beat we also get to see actions happening to the beat. For example we see a lot of this in the first minute of the video. Small things like Kesha smashing her foot down on the floor, pictures falling off walls, walking down stairs to the beat and her mum dropping pancakes which hit the floor to the beat. All these small factors make a big difference to the video and effect the audience. The more the video effects the audience the better as they will remember the song and will be easily recognised if heard again. This will result in people getting used to the song and liking it which will in turn result in sales for the song.

At around 2 minutes 30 seconds into the song we get to a point were the main beat and bass stop and we see Kesha dancing on the floor in a blank grey room. As the music builds up again and intensifies the cuts start to happen at a lot faster pass. As a result of this it links the song to the video and as well as doing this it makes the audience again feel involved with the song. This is yet another conventions that makes the audience like the song as well as want to buy it which is key as the point in the promo video is to sell the song to the audience.

Thought out the full song we get cuts to Kesha stood in front of a yellow back drop. In the shot we see her Mickey mousing. Mickey mousing is a technique used in a lot of music videos and live performances, its basically the artist moving their mouth to the words but not actually singing any words. It just simply makes the video easier to produce and edit with the audience not being able to tell that it is taking place.

To make the video appeal to its target audience it needs to be able to represent and appeal to them. The fact that the hole video is about going to a party represents a typical teenage lifestyle as teenagers are the songs target audience. We can see this because Kesha is seen being rebellious. For example we get to see her being arrested by the police but in the next shot we see her back in the car showing of some handcuffs that are still on her wrist. This shows that she has ran away from the police and can not be told what to do by other people of a higher authority. Another way that the video reflects the target audience is the clothes that she wears. She is often showing off her legs, boots and a old loose top. This represents a typical teenager that has been or is going to a party. With the target audience being represented like this the audience can often relate to the video which again creates the feeling of being involved with the song.

With all these conventions we can see that Kesha is trying to appeal to the target audience and make them enjoy the song. This will result in more sales which means that she has created a successful promo music video.
