Evaluation

I have now completed and finished my project. The brief that I was set was to make a promotion package of the release of on album, to include promo video, together with a cover for its release on DVD and a magazine advertisement for the DVD. To complete this task effectively I have had to understand the conventions of different media texts which include music videos, digipacks and magazine music articles. For my music video analysis I have looked at different media texts and wrote down the conventions that they hold and how well they are put together, edited and presented. I have seen that music videos represent themselves and their audience. This results in a powerful link between the two which in turn will result in the product selling easier. With the understanding of how this has been done and how they are so effective I was able to create my own music video, digipack and magazine music article. This also in turn had to represent the genre that I was using, this was helped by the fact that I made sure the media text that I looked at was the genre that I was looking to adopt.

Above I have stated that I have looked at different media texts so that I get a good understanding of the genre that I am using. The genre that I was using was R&B, so to understand and see what target audience I am looking at I carried out a questionnaire. This gave me a set of results that allowed me to see that my target audience was going to be the average teenager. To reach this target audience I had to stick to certain areas that reflect and relate to a teenagers life so that they feel a connection and link to the video. This includes relationships, being out going and problems. To make the video reflect these key points I had to use specific actors so that my video had the right feel and atmosphere. The actors I used were both 18 and the story line behind video was based on a relationship having trouble and being solved. As a result of this I feel that my target audience was successfully reached as I also used a modern day song which was No Air by Jordan sparks and Chris brown. This song is well known through out teenagers and is a very popular song which results in it linking to this target audience well.

For my sublimanery texts I have again used the conventions from other texts of the same genre to create my final pieces. I have found that the two texts really have to stand out from any other product and at the same time reflect each other. These two texts need to relate and reflect each other so that the audience can clearly tell that the two pieces are related to each other. As a result of this happening, the product will get spotted and recognized much easier and quicker. For example as you have been able to see the colour scheme and style that I have adopted are very similar. In the two texts I also used the same image of each artist so again then can be easily recognised as well as using the same image for the text that I made. To get the effect I wanted for my text I had to use a technique called light graffiti. Light graffiti is done by using a long exposure time on a still camera in a dark environment, using a light source to make different shapes and objects. By me using the same features, it results in more sales and publicity of my video as the design will become well known and easily recognised by the public audience.

In the making of the video I have used various different media technologies to create my video and present different aspects of it, to shoot the video itself I used my own camera that is a Nikon D5000 and uploaded this onto windows movie maker. With the camera being my own camera I am experienced and know the camera inside out and was able to put these skills into my video. One of these was the fact I could easily change the main focus point of the camera which gives a lot more depth into my video. The reason I had to use windows movie maker is because the format of my camera would not link to the format of the editing suit systems that were available at college. Once it was loaded onto movie maker I was then at the stage where I could edit and arrange my video into a presentable format. I used many different editing techniques to create the end product. These included slowing down a shot or speeding it up so the footage fitted in with the music. Also I used a black and white effect on many different occasions which was put in to show the difference from real life to reality. To present my work I have also used www.blogger.com which shows all the work that I have produced to work towards and the process of my video. An advantage to this is that it shows the journey I have come on and I am able to see my ideas develop over time. To make my magazine article and my digipack I have adopted the skills I gained from last year in making my magazine articles so as a result I have used DTP. So with the previous knowledge I have of this area I have made an effective set of subliminary texts.

In the process of making my video I have undergone many processes and problems. To start the process of my video going I had to make a storyboard so that I had a plan of what I planned to do and could work out what shots I was going to use. This in all is basically a visual script that allows me to present and produce my video much easier. Once I had done this I made a list of shots that I needed to take so that when it came to doing my shoots I had details of what needed to be done. This allowed me to have a small list compared to a storyboard to direct my video and at the same time to have a storyboard so that my actors were totally clear of what I expected. Now that I had done this I went and shot my video. Once my shots had all been taken I moved on to edit my video. To do this I used windows movie maker. One problem that did occur was that once I had edited all the shots taken it became clear I did not have enough footage. To make matters worse my actress Alex became very ill which resulted in me no longer being able to shoot. To resolve this I had to reuse past footage that had already been used and stretch other footage to fill in the gaps that I had left over. This also resulted in me having to change parts of the story line and the way I wanted it presenting but overall I feel that considering the circumstances the end result is of a high quality.

Shooting Schedule

When it comes to do my shooting I am hoping to perform this in on day. The reason for this is that the actors in my video will be looking exactly the same, wearing the same clothes and in the same mind frame. It would not be right if one day they are in the mood to really perform and take the video seriously and another day come to do it and they don’t feel like it at all and just want to mess around. The weather is also a big factor because if I were to plan two days to do my shooting the weather maybe sunny one day and rainy the next which would not make the video as effect and of a high quality.

LIIAR

Language

In the media texts I am going to create, I need to make that the language is correct. This will link to the genre that I am linking my work to. The main part of language that I am going to have to look at is the wording that I use in my text and also the script I am going to use for my video. So that I do get the language right in all my three texts that I am going to create I will have to make sure that I link this to my target audience appropriately. The genre that I am using as I have previously stated is R&B. So to get the language right I am going to have to use slang words and use modern day speech that the typical teenager would use. I am going to do this because as you can see in the results of my audience research, the target audience I am looking to attract is that of teenagers. For example the script target people that have emotions and have strong feelings for different aspects of life. This can be shown in a many different song titles of their music; The Man Who Cant Be Moved and We Cry are just a brief start. This is why it is key for me to get the language of my text right as it reflects the music itself and as a result states the genre.

Institution

The institution for my album would be that of a high reputation and vast experience as they would know how to make the album so successful. The quality of the label would also be very important as different labels give different qualities and benefits. For example EMI, In July 2009 there were reports that EMI would not sell CDs to independent album retailers in a bid to cut costs. This is why I would go to an institute like Sony as they have a vast empire that have many different products then music labels such as TVs, audio systems, play station and many more. I feel that a new album would benefit a lot more from a foundation like this. To present my video to the public I would put my video on MTV or total kiss as these are very popular music channels. This would give a vast amount of publicity for my video and in turn result in more sales.

Ideology

The ideology of my project again has to be correct. It will have to fit in with other media texts as well as fitting in with them. My album cover will have to fit in on a shelf with those of higher calibre but at the same time stand out to the audience I am aiming to reach. Also my video is going to have to fit in with other videos that are being presented. Again it can not look out of place but at the same time it will have to stand out and be effective in its chosen field. The colours and layout of the digipac and magazine article. They will have to be bold colours but at the same time blend into each other to give a striking effect that will stand out from other products and texts.

Audience

The audience that I will be looking to aim my product and texts at is that of a typical teenager around the ages of 14 – 19. So that I have the understanding of this age range I have done a questionnaire that finds out how they listen to music and how they see music itself. This understanding is key as it results in me knowing exactly what they look for and like. The content of my video will be a love story as planned with a break up and a happy ending as this is typical of a teenagers life as they grow up. The text that I am going to use in my digipac and magazine article will again have to appeal to my target audience. To do this it will be short and too the point as a typical teenager will not want to stand around and read about the artists and so on, they would much rather know the name of the song and who sings it.

Representation

My product and media texts are also going to have to represent my target audience. To do this I am going to have to represent and present to them snap shots of experiences that they will be familiar with. For example the story line behind my video is a couple that break up and then get back together. This is typical of a teenage life as relationships come and go as they are young and inexperienced. Also to represent my audience further I am going to use teenagers in my video as the main characters which I have gone into further depth in my cast list.

Storyboard

I am now at the stage that i need to go ahead and draw out my story board so that i am able to see my ideas on the page which will act as a visual script. This will allow me to see all the different shots that i will be using and how the video is going to piece together.

Analysis of Lyrics

No Air song lyrics

Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?

If I should die before I wake
It's 'cause you took my breath away
Losing you is like living in a world with no air, oh

I'm here alone, didn't wanna leave
My heart won't move, it's incomplete
If there was a way that I could make you understand

But how do you expect me
To live alone with just me?

'Cause my world revolves around you
It's so hard for me to breathe

Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?
Can't live, can't breathe with no air
It's how I feel whenever you ain't there
There's no air, no air

Got me out here in the water so deep
Tell me how you gon' be without me?
If you ain't here I just can't breathe
There's no air, no air

No air, air
No air, air
No air, air
No air, air

I walk, I ran, I jump, I flew
Right off the ground to float to you
With no gravity to hold me down for real

But somehow I'm still alive inside
You took my breath but I survived
I don't how but I don't even care

So how do you expect me
To live alone with just me?
'Cause my world revolves around you
It's so hard for me to breathe

Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?
Can't live, can't breathe with no air
It's how I feel whenever you ain't there
There's no air, no air

Got me out here in the water so deep
Tell me how you gon' be without me?
If you ain't here I just can't breathe
There's no air, no air

No air, air
No air, air
No air, air
No air, air

No more
Baby
There's no air, no airNo air, oh!

Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?
Can't live, can't breathe with no air
It's how I feel whenever you ain't there
There's no air, no air

Got me out here in the water so deep
Tell me how you gon' be without me?
If you ain't here I just can't breathe
There's no air, no air

(No air)
(No air)
(No air)
(No air)

Tell me how I'm supposed to breathe with no air?
Can't live, can't breathe with no air
It's how I feel whenever you ain't there
There's no air, no air

Got me out here in the water so deep
Tell me how you gon' be without me?
If you ain't here I just can't breathe
There's no air, no air

No air, air
No air, air
No air, air
No air

Above are the lyrics to my song No Air and the points that are highlighted in bold are elaberated below

"No Air" at the points we hear no air i could show a shot of the two art its being sad and moving away from each other. The fact it says No Air shows that they are being pulled apart and miss each other as they have "no air" to breathe. I could also towards the end of song when "No Air" is used again i could have them coming together and showing that they do in fact need each other to live on.

"if i should die before i wake" this could show great emotion and be a key starting point for the video which could really set the tone and style of the video.

"I'm here alone, didn't wanna leave" would be able to show how the two singers do not want to be apart even though they are going their own ways in the video. the line shortly after But how do you expect me "To live alone with just me?" also expresses this point.

"Got me out here in the water so deep" this part of the song can show how much a part of each others life they were and how they miss each other.

"I walk, I ran, I jump, I flew
Right off the ground to float to you
With no gravity to hold me down for real" at this point in the song it can represent again how much one of the artists miss the other and how they need each other in their life's.

"So how do you expect me
To live alone with just me?" these lyrics in the song again show the main story and how the storyline relates to the lyrics itself. This could then lead to two artists coming back together and realising their love
